This is a bit of a late notice but I am now the staff writer at The Calvert Journal. See the website for the latest publications, they will be pretty regular now.
Behold, one of my favourite things I've ever had to write!
Weird-pop as a genre, Monetochka (a 17 y.o. internet star from Ekaterinburg) as the genre's best. If you speak Russian listening to the lyrics is a must, if you don't - just trust me, this girl is one of the funniest and smartest new singers in Russia.
I wrote about an activist/artist that is trying to bring awareness to a serious issue in Russian orphanages. Simultaneously easy and impossibly hard to write because I can't imagine there are human beings who are being put through this - and human beings who do this and then go to sleep at night.
P.S. There are links to the artist's FB page in the text - follow her for more info (she writes in Russian but FB handles translation pretty well now).
Remember me announcing a documentary project with Marko Vuorinen last summer? Well, the trailer for the film Eight (Восемь) that I co-produced with Marko is out:
The film itself will be out later this summer, you'll be able to see it online.
Meanwhile, Marko's previous film, Tamara W, is available online. See it if you have some spare cash - it's beautiful and insightful.
I wrote for The Calvert Journal on young Russian fashion brands that are obsessed with Cyrillic prints. A more punk version of Gosha Rubchinsky (have you ever met a punk that can afford a £200 shirt?).
Great news guys, I'm going back to school!
I got a PhD studentship offer from City University London (City, University of London from September when it's joining Uni Of London!) where I studied for my MA. I will be going back in September to do research on a very cool topic - will hopefully publish bits in journals along the way. Fear not: I will still be freelancing (although probably less than now).
I wrote for Broadly on a topic both exciting and cool: a St Petersburg-based artist that paints 'with her breasts' (her whole body actually). Read and see pics here.
I got to try all the hip infusions in the coolest Russian bars and write about them for the Calvert Journal: read here. In case you didn't know - craft beer is over.
Wrote about technology-based horror films and why Russian film-makers are in love with the genre here.
St Petersburg is the least Soviet city in Russia, so I wrote about touristy Soviet experiences that you can find here for a bit of communist immersion therapy: read here.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
